A little store with a big heart opened its doors in West End on Saturday, 3 September, later celebrating the opening in style by hosting an official launch party on Thursday, 15 September. Equipped with an unwavering passion for animal rights, The Cruelty Free Shop is dedicated to providing the Australian community with a diverse range of vegan-friendly products, many of which can be hard to find in regular stores.
In 2001, one year of veganism had allowed The Cruelty Free Shop business owner Jessica Bailey to better appreciate the lifestyle, noting the diet was both good for her body, and beneficial for animals and the environment as well. However, she found many people were struggling to stick with the change due to the difficulty in accessing vegan-friendly foods. Jessica says, there was an observable gap in the market – she wanted to create a safe haven where vegans could buy the products they needed, without having to spend great lengths of time checking labels and worrying about nutritional information. Fifteen years later, with stores online and open in Sydney, Melbourne, and now Brisbane, she is proud to say she has achieved her goal.
The Brisbane store celebration provided guests with an opportunity to meet the friendly faces behind the idea, and the staff behind the counter, plus, sample some delicious vegan finger food washed down with vegan wine or beer. According to Jessica, web surfers in Southeast Queensland are the most common online researchers of ‘veganism’ in Australia, instilling her with hope The Cruelty Free Shop will be a welcome addition to the 4101 and wider Brisbane community.
