Thousands to celebrate World Vegan Day at the Vegan Day Out
As interest in veganism skyrockets in Australia, a record number of people are expected to hit the streets of Glebe to mark World Vegan Day at the biannual Vegan Day Out.
The Vegan Day Out, organised by Australia’s vegan supermarket chain The Cruelty Free Shop, is a food and shopping crawl of Glebe on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November 2019.
This year the event coincides with World Vegan Day, an annual global event that promotes the health, environmental and ethical benefits of veganism.
Jessica Bailey, The Cruelty Free Shop CEO said there’s no better way to celebrate World Vegan Day than by trying new things at the Vegan Day Out.
“Dozens of cafes, restaurants and shops in Glebe will be slashing prices on vegan products for the Vegan Day Out, so it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the very best ethical goods Sydney has to offer at the lowest prices.”
Mrs Bailey said veganism no longer meant sacrificing flavour or quality.
“Twenty years ago, there was a bland, limited range of vegan options available. Nowadays, the food is so flavourful and mouth-watering that everyone can enjoy being vegan. The Cruelty Free Shop will have free food tastings during the Vegan Day Out, so we encourage anyone curious about vegan foods to come sample it and see what all the fuss is about.”
A record-breaking turnout is expected at the Vegan Day Out this year, corresponding with a rise in plant-based diets in Australia.
Almost 2.5 million Australians (12.1% of the population) are now vegan or vegetarian, up from just below 2.2 million in 2014, according to Roy Morgan research. This increase is reflected in Australian’s vegan packaged food market, which is the third fastest growing in the world, after the United Arab Emirates and China. It’s currently worth $136 million annually and is expected to rise to $215 million by 2020, according to Euromonitor International.
Mrs Bailey encouraged everyone to join the growing vegan movement.
“Changing to a plant-based diet is the single biggest way an individual can reduce their carbon emissions. It’s also been shown to improve health, but most importantly, it means no one was harmed in the making of your meals. Give it a try at the Vegan Day Out!” Mrs Bailey said.
